Are You Teaching What You Think You Are Teaching?

Research involving assessment within a traditional classroom has been well documented; however, adaptation of formative assessment to the online classroom hasn’t been thoroughly explored. “Classroom Assessment is an approach designed to help teachers find out what students are learning in the classroom and how well they are learning it” (Angelo & Cross, 1993). During this session, we will share modifications of Angelo and Cross’s Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) and present a theoretical model to their application within asynchronous online environments.

• Rick Holbeck, has been in education for twenty years, at all levels, from kindergarten to higher education. In addition to being the director of Online Full-Time Faculty at Grand Canyon University, he teaches courses for the College of Education. Rick has presented at several regional, national, and international conferences where the focus has been on classroom assessment techniques, technology, and hybrid peer review for journal publication. He is also currently the guest editor for the next volume of the Journal of Instructional Research.
• Emily Bergquist, instructor and manager of online, full-time faculty for the College of Education at Grand Canyon University and has presented at a number of regional, national, and international level conferences. She completed her BA in Elementary Education from Arizona State University and her Master of Education: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Grand Canyon University. She is currently working on her PhD in Psychology with an emphasis in cognition and Instruction from Grand Canyon University with an expected graduation date in the spring of 2015.
